Starting therapy can be uncomfortable and anxiety provoking, especially for those who've never tried it before. I mean, you're sharing super vulnerable information about yourself and trusting it with a complete stranger-- it's a weird concept, right? Fortunately, these feelings typically fade once you develop a strong relationship with your therapist. Sometimes knowing what to expect can help us feel more comfortable, so here's a breakdown of what working with me would look like.
If you have any questions about the therapy process or if you want to do a vibe check before booking an actual session with me, then a consultation would be best. This is a free 10min phone call to ensure you and I are a good fit for what you're looking for. Please note- virtual therapy and walk & talk therapy are not appropriate for everyone.

Therapy is what you want it to be. Some people use it as a safe space to talk about what they're going through at the moment and some people know exactly what they want to work on. You don't have to have all the answers right now. We are here to support you in whatever way we can.
Your first session is called your "intake session". Once you book your 50min intake session, you will receive new client paperwork and short assessments through your secure client portal via JaneApp. (If you're using insurance to pay for sessions, you'll have an additional platform with paperwork). This first session is largely built around you and your therapist getting to know each other and seeing if you both vibe. During your first session, you and your therapist talk about what's bringing you into therapy, what you would like to gain by starting therapy and create a plan together that aligns with your current needs-including how often we schedule sessions. If for any reason you or your therapist decide your therapist is not a good fit for your needs, it will be discussed and referrals will be provided for other therapists. This first session is largely built around you and your therapist getting to know each other and seeing if you both vibe. Sometimes a second session is needed to finish the "intake" questions.
For new clients, you will meet with your therapist weekly for 1 month to get familiar with your therapist, complete the intake questions (if it took longer than the 1st session), and get a jump start on your goals.
All sessions following the intake session(s) are what's considered the "working sessions". This relates back to us being here to support you with where you're at. While every session may be different, you can expect to learn something new, whether it be about you, someone else, or maybe even a skill during sessions. It's also normal for some sessions to be harder emotionally than others. It really just depends on what you feel like talking about that day. In therapy you have the ability to choose what to work on and we encourage you to advocate for your needs.
Therapy is a very individualized process. How long you stay in therapy will depend on your identified goals, the effort you put into therapy and any barriers that may come up along the way. Outpatient therapy is voluntary, meaning you as the client can choose to end treatment anytime you want. There are also times when the therapist may choose to discontinue therapy with you, such as non-payment of sessions, too many cancellations, not being a good fit, or scheduling conflicts. It's normal to naturally decrease frequency of sessions over time as you learn to manage your stressors and feelings independently. And as new things come up in your life that you need more support on, you can always increase your sessions again.
Termination sessions are your last session before ending therapy and it's meant to discuss your progress & barriers towards your therapy goals, provide feedback, and offer you referrals/recommendations if applicable.
A non-refundable prepayment is required to book your 1st session. Payment for sessions following the intake session will be due the morning before your scheduled appointment.
You will be required to keep a debit/credit card on file for late cancellations (under 48hrs) or no shows. This is outlined further in my informed consent documents you will receive after deciding to schedule intake appointment.
During our consult, I will add you to my billing system- Alma. Your insurance benefits will be verified and all copays/deductibles will be processed through that platform.

Consultations are required for coaching clients. This is a free 10min phone call or video chat to ensure you and I are a good fit for what you're looking for and so I can explain the coaching process. Follow the link below to see my availability and directly schedule "Free 10 min Consultation".
Coaching services are offered in either individual solution focused sessions or packages that include multiple sessions. Packages are best for those wanting accountability and guidance as they start taking action towards their goals vs. individual sessions can help you create a plan to reach your goals without the support along the way. The Rates page describes what's included in my packages and in my 1:1 Strategy Session.
It's important to remember, similar to therapy, the outcome of your coaching experience largely depends on the work you put into it. A coach's role is to help guide you, provide feedback and to offer suggestions at times, but ultimately helps you gain insight into creating realistic goals, identifying any barriers to achieving them, and identifying action steps to achieve your goals.
