Starting therapy can be uncomfortable and anxiety provoking, especially for those who've never tried it before. I mean, you're sharing super vulnerable information about yourself and trusting it with a complete stranger-- it's a weird concept, right?! However, to help you know what it would look like to get started, a description of the steps are below. ⬇
First step is to schedule a consultation with me. This will be a free & quick phone call (no more than 15min) to ensure you and I are a good fit for your needs. We will discuss your availability, rates, and any other questions you may have. It's also an opportunity for you to see if we "vibe"- which is super important in therapy! If you decide to move forward, we will get you scheduled for your intake session. You will then be emailed with a link to create your own client portal where you will have access to all your new client paperwork & consent forms that you'll need to complete before your 1st session.
*For couples counseling/marriage counseling, both you and your partner will create individual client portals and have your own individual paperwork to complete.
The 1st session, AKA- Intake session, is what I call the "information gathering session". I want to know what makes you, you. I'll ask about things like your relationships with friends & family, your academics/career history, substance use, sleeping/eating patterns and more. I'll want to know how your challenges have been interfering with your day-to-day and how you've attempted to manage them up until now. This allows me to see the world through your lens and understand how it relates to your presenting concerns. We will identify your goals and what you're hoping to see happen within your life as a result of therapy. Based on all this information, we will determine frequency of sessions, which could be once/week or once/every other week. Frequency also depends on any financial limitations, as well as, your wants.
*This step will look a little different for couples counseling/marriage counseling. as it'll be more focused on the relationship with your partner and it's longer than an individual Intake session.
The structure of all sessions after the intake are up to you. Some sessions clients want to sit in silence and process internally, other sessions we could be practicing techniques to manage symptoms that are interfering with your life. Most sessions are conversations with me sprinkling in some clinical skills to help you explore, process, and reflect. Regardless of how the session goes, I will be there with you as we navigate your journey together towards improved wellness and resilience.
You can pay by either your debit/credit card via HIPAA compliant software or cash. If you no show, or late cancel (under 24hr notice), you will be charged the full rate of your session, with the exception of emergencies.
